Spartans extend winning streak to four games

CASTLETON, Vt. – Freshman Amanda Flodstrom (Stratham, N.H.) and senior Liz Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y.) scored four goals apiece to lead Castleton to a 22-4 victory over Thomas College in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Spartan Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans improve to 5-2 overall on the season. The Terriers fall to 1-4 overall.

Offensively for Castleton, Marie Van Der Kar (Manchester, Vt.) added a hat trick while Angelica Mazzola (Centerport, N.Y.), Stephanie Paproski (Newtown, Conn.) and Sarah Clark (Guilford, Vt.) chipped in with two goals each. Freshmen Taryn Smith (Southbury, Conn.), JenniLee Mark (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Meaghan Heuer (Wading River, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring along with junior Katelyn Nardini (Scotia, N.Y.) netting a goal apiece.

Flodstrom, Mazzola and Paproski led the Spartans in the assist department with two apiece.

Kily Jolicoeur (Oakland, Maine) led Thomas with a hat trick. Ceara DiBiase (Westbrook, Maine) added a goal and one assist.

Flodstrom put Castleton on the board first at 27:02 as the freshman converted on a free position attempt past Terriers' goaltender Teshia Cates (Skowhegan, Maine) for a 1-0 lead and her 17th marker of the season. Clark followed with her 10th goal of the season on a nice feed from Van Der Kar at 26:30 to make it 2-0.  Flodstrom pushed the Spartans ahead, 3-0, as she dodged two defenders from the left side of the eight-meter line and ripped a shot past Cates at 26:12 of the first half.

Jolicoeur responded for Thomas at 25:41 racing down the middle of the field sniping a shot past Castleton goaltender Lily Derbyshire (Little Compton, R.I.) for her team-leading 12th goal of the season.

At 23:02, Nardini finished on a free position attempt to make it 4-1 and the Spartans never looked back scoring nine-straight goals to close pushing their advantage to 12-1.

Castleton led at halftime 14-3 taking 29 shots in the first half, 47 total for the game. The Spartans picked up 34 groundballs and won the draw control match up 20-8.

Cates made 10 saves in the loss while Derbyshire stopped one shot and backup goaltender Ashly Neal (York Beach, Maine) made three saves, all in the second half.

Flodstrom finished the afternoon 2-for-2 on free position attempts and caused one turnover. Haggerty added one assist and grabbed four groundballs while Mazzola won a game-high six draw controls and picked up two groundballs.

Castleton returns to action on Saturday, April 9 as the Spartans travel to Bridgewater State University for a New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) match up at 2:00 pm.
