CASTLETON, Vt. - The Castleton State College men's soccer team fell 3-0 to visiting Oneonta State College at Spartan Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half that yielded just six total shots, the Red Dragons (1-0) exploded for three unanswered goals over the final 45 minutes of play to earn the shutout victory in what was the season opener for both teams.
Castleton (0-1) mustered a pair of solid opportunities at a goal in the first half, including a bending direct kick from Josh Costa (Sutton, Mass.) that Oneonta State keeper Max Siegelman (Roslyn, N.Y.) stopped for his lone first-half save. Oneonta State quickly countered, but a tackle by Nick Johnas (Stephentown, N.Y.) kept the Red Dragons at bay, and the scoreless tie intact.
Larry Pestana (Valhalla, N.Y.) broke into the scoring column in the 48th minute of play, sliding onto a Raymond Fitzpatrick (Garden City, N.Y.) through pass and slipping it past Castleton keeper Andy LaCroix (Jamaica, Vt.).
Gary Laronde (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute, converting an unassisted tally on a laser inside the upper righthand corner. Laronde ran onto a through ball from the midfield area, outmaneuvered a Castleton defender and unleashed his shot past LaCroix.
Dan Josepher (Manorville, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring heading in a Dan Scott (Salt Point, N.Y.) rebound. Oneonta State played the ball across the goal-mouth and Scott struck a rocket that ricocheted downward off the cross bar, right to Josepher who headed it into the open net.
Siegelman ended the afternoon with two saves to earn the shutout, while LaCroix made one save in the loss.
Castleton returns to Spartan Stadium Sunday at 1:00 p.m. to play host to Colby-Sawyer College. Oneonta State will compete in the Rochester Flower City Tournament this weekend, opening play versus St. John Fisher Saturday at 4:30 p.m., and finishing up with host Rochester Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
