CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University men's lacrosse team looks to move up the North Atlantic Conference standings as it hosts Husson Saturday, April 8, before a non-conference game against SUNY Potsdam Sunday, April 9, both starting at 1 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.
Castleton is 5-5 overall and 2-1 within the NAC entering this weekend's action. As a team, the Spartans are averaging 34.0 shots, 10.5 goals, 36.4 ground balls, and 10.3 caused turnovers per game.
Sam Siegel leads the Spartans with 19 goals, tied for third in the conference, followed by Jason Sedell with 14 goals. Along with 12 goals, Louis Alhage is tied for second in the NAC in assists with 19 and fourth in total points with 31.
Joshua Gosselin has won 63.3 percent (133-of-210) of the faceoffs he has taken, plus he leads the team with 60 ground balls. Peyton Faasse leads the Spartans with 16 caused turnovers and is second on the squad with 32 ground balls. In net, Brandon Myron is second in the NAC with 99 total saves and fifth in the league with a 10.71 goals against average.
Husson is 2-4 overall after a 14-6 loss to Dean on Wednesday, but 1-0 within the NAC with a 23-2 victory over Green Mountain on March 25. As a team, the Eagles are averaging 38.7 shots, 10.17 goals, 38.0 ground balls, and 8.0 caused turnovers per game.
Jacob Boothby leads the team with 19 goals and 24 total points, while Brooks Gay currently has 12 goals and eight assists and Zach Glazier has 10 goals and 11 assists for 21 points. Matt Martin has been the starting goalie for four of the six games, posting a 9.72 goals against average and a .613 save percentage, but Nick Zavorotny started Wednesday's game for the Eagles.
This will be the 15th meeting all-time between Castleton and Husson, with the Spartans winning the previous 14 contests. The teams met twice last season, first on April 9, 2016, in Bangor, Maine, a 12-7 Castleton victory in which the Spartans outscored the Eagles 9-2 in the second half. In the NAC Tournament semifinals May 4, 2016, Castleton scored the first nine goals on its way to a 15-5 victory, led by hat tricks from Taylor Swarter, Tom Pardew, and Siegel.
SUNY Potsdam is also 2-4 entering the weekend, defeating SUNY Canton 11-7 on Tuesday. The Bears will face SUNY Oneonta Saturday before coming to Castleton Sunday. As a team, the Bears are averaging 34.7 shots, 9.5 goals, 31.5 ground balls, and 8.7 caused turnovers.
Berkley Stone leads the team with 17 goals, while Eric Soderquist has 10 goals and seven assists and Nick Orsini has contributed 10 goals and three assists. Jack Bezek has started the last five games in net for the Bears, posting an 11.51 goals against average and a .600 save percentage with 78 saves.
This will be the fifth meeting all-time between Castleton and SUNY Potsdam, with the Bears winning the previous four contests. Last season in Potsdam, N.Y., the Bears outscored the Spartans 7-1 in the second quarter on their way to a 14-8 victory. Kyle Lutinski scored two goals to lead Castleton, while Soderquist led the Bears with eight goals.
The road game at Lyndon State originally scheduled for Wednesday, April 12, has been moved to Wednesday, April 26, so after this weekend, the Spartans will next face Kean University Saturday, April 15, starting at 1 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.
