Spartans Down SUNY Canton
Canton, N.Y. - The Spartans rolled to an 18-5 victory over the SUNY Canton Roos in non-conference action on Saturday, Apr. 20, earning their sixth consecutive win.
Spencer Hunt led the squad, notching three goals and three assists for a game high six points. Zach Davidson netted a goal and two assists while Nohea King grabbed a goal and three assists as thirteen different players found the net for the visiting Spartans.
Peter Latulippe made 18 saves, allowing just five goals for his seventh win of the season. Corey Spuck took the loss in goals for the Roos, allowing 15 goals while making nine saves on the day.
The Spartans jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first quarter, getting two goals from Alex Green to lead off the game. Phil Patterson and Paul Saulsbury each netted first period goals for the Spartans as well, putting the Spartans up 4-0 in the early stages. The Roos answered with two goals in the final five minutes of the period. Chris Gamble notched scores with 4:02 and 2:36 left to make the score 4-2.
In the second quarter, Castleton held the Roos scoreless while putting up five goals of their own. Hunt and Will Stuhler scored 42 seconds apart to extend the Spartan lead to 6-2 with 10:53 left in the half. Hunt scored again with 8:59 left in the frame off an assist from freshman David Barrett. The Spartans added a goal from Ken Bourneuf and a man-up tally from Sam Bailey in the final three minutes of the period to take a 9-2 lead into halftime.
In the third frame, the Roos scored just eight seconds into the period with a man-up tally from Garrett DiTullio and scored again with 11:57 remaining in the third. Castleton responded with a 6-0 run to finish the frame, taking a 15-4 lead into the final period.
The Spartans cruised through the fourth quarter, outscoring the Roos 3-1 within the frame to win 18-5. Zach Devoid, Taylor Swarter, and Matt Nota each scored within the final three minutes of the contest to seal the Spartan victory.
Ben Roberts led the squad with seven groundballs, going 19-for-26 in the faceoff circle on the day. The Spartans outworked the home team, scooping 40 groundballs while the Roos earned just 26. The win moves Castleton to 11-3 on the season, matching their win total from all of last season. The Spartans will return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 24 when they host Lyndon State in their North Atlantic Conference finale.
