TROY, N.Y. – Powered by goals from nine different players, including three off the sticks of senior captains Andrew Miller and Andrew Liptak, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team defeated Castleton, 14-3 in non-conference action at East Campus Stadium.  The win moves the 17th-ranked Engineers to 3-0 on the season, while the Spartans slip to 0-2 overall.
Rensselaer came out firing to open the game and held a 5-0 advantage through the opening quarter, with two tallies coming off the stick of Liptak (Westfield, Mass.).
The Engineers continued to add on in the second quarter of play as junior attack David Hey (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and Miller (New Hartford, N.Y.) scored back-to-back for a 7-0 lead with 10:45 to play.
Following a goal from sophomore Mike Hicks (Canton, Mass.) with 1:21 on the clock, the visitors finally broke through as rookie attack Zach Davidson (South Burlington, Vt.) battled around an RPI defender and fired it off a one-step to the middle past netminder James Manchester (Niskayuna, N.Y.) before halftime.
Miller got things going to open the third quarter, scoring unassisted on the Engineers third man-up goal of the game, while Liptak pushed the advantage to nine (10-1) at the 9:52 mark with his third of the game.
Castleton, which was held to just eight shots in the first half of action, began to capitalize on RPI turnovers and made it count with 3:59 remaining in the quarter as senior AJ Groot (Canandaigua, N.Y.) fired a long shot past Manchester off a great feed from Davidson behind the net.
The Engineers pushed back late in the frame as Miller netted his third and rookie Casey Colligan (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) scored the first of his career with six seconds to go on the clock.
Rookie Aaron Shavel (Lawrenceville, N.J.) then made it a 14-2 lead for Rensselaer late in the final quarter, netting the first two goals of his career.  Castleton added a final tally as freshman Cam Ormiston (Wakefield, R.I.) scored past goalie Jon Yen (Short Hills, N.J.) at 39 seconds.
In addition to Miller, who also had two assists, RPI got a pair of tallies from Shavel, while Hicks and Hey each added a goal and an assist.  In goal, Manchester improved to 3-0, stopping three shots.  Sophomore Alex Castronovo (Garden City, N.Y.) played 13:11 in the fourth quarter, making three saves, while Yen stopped no shots in the final 1:49 of the game.
